How to design a hospital for surgical data science
Hannes Kenngott (Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany)

We surgeons live in demanding times. We are bound to bring the best possible care to our patients and respond to their rising demands. To fulfill this promise we research and collaborate extensively with other specialties, nurses, services and administration. Now the demands and promising benefits of a connected world of industry 4.0 in a positive medical adaptation adds new complexity and opportunities to our system.

How could a new hospital building that should be used for the coming 75 years be designed for the present day and a reasonable amount of possible futures? What can and should we do today to be able to upgrade our hospitals in 5, 10, 20 years? How can a hospital use cutting edge technology and change management to stand out and provide best internationally renowned care while being a great place to work alongside improving profitability?

This talk will give a glimpse on the goals, building plans, politics, restrictions, technology, organization and our journey of building the new surgical building of the University of Heidelberg, especially emphasizing small step improvements that everyone can undertake and big steps that need a more strategic approach and open discussion.
